What are they?
Curriculum is an organized set of concepts, content, and skills which teachers use to help students learn important ideas and information, to develop their critical and creative thinking skills, to challenge them as learners, and to stimulate a love for learning.
In 1993, Massachusetts passed the Education Reform Act which requires communities to develop local curriculum derived from frameworks approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education. The state frameworks groups content and performance outcomes in clusters representing grades K to 4, 5 to 8 and 9 - 12.
Brookline's K-8 Learning Expectations and 9-12 Course Syllabi SY 07-08 have been created in concert with the state frameworks, extending the major concepts in a comprehensive, detailed and helpful manner.

How are they used?
Teachers, parents and students use curriculum guidelines in a variety of ways. Teachers connect children’s learning across disciplines, extend topics as interest and motivation dictate, and develop new activities to enhance or clarify the framework. These guidelines describe the intended results of good instruction on the part of the teacher combined with focused effort on the part of the learner. They may be used by teachers to focus instruction, by students to focus their efforts, and by parents to inform their interaction with their child and their child’s teacher.
Revision of this document will be ongoing as we find better ways to integrate subject areas, to utilize technology effectively, and to improve our own skills through research and professional development. We welcome feedback from all constituents as we strive to improve the teaching and learning partnerships that involve the parent, the child, and the teacher.
