Open House

On Friday, January 18 BSSCC will be hosting an Open House from 2:30 to 4:00. This is a chance to meet parents and teachers as well as see our classrooms. Applications will be available at the Open House.
Although we have few openings in our infant and toddler classrooms for the 2008-2009 school year, we will have several openings in our Preschool classrom.

We are located in the Baldwin school building at 490 Heath St., just off of Hammond St. which crosses Route 9 at the CVS/Star Market intersection. If traveling west on Route 9, take a left on Hammond and then a left onto Heath. We are then about a block up on the right hand side.

History and Current Status
The Brookline Schools Staff Children’s Center (“BSSCC”) was started by a group of parents who taught in the Brookline Public Schools. Their idea was to have a safe, nurturing, and interesting place to leave their children while they were teaching. The Center started in August 1979, in the Lincoln Primary School in Brookline. The parent-teachers were fortunate to obtain the support of the Superintendent of Schools and the School Committee, who donated space in the school.

The Brookline Schools Staff Children’s Center provides care for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers from the ages of 4 months to 5 years. We serve approximately 34 families. The Center runs off the Brookline Public School calendar and opens at 7:15 a.m. and closes at 4:30 p.m. (3:00 p.m. on Fridays). Depending upon demand and resources, there may be a separate school vacation and summer option.

We are now located in the Baldwin school building in Chestnut Hill. This building of large airy classrooms and an indoor gym is set on 1.5 acres of a park that includes an open field, two playgrounds, and a tennis court.

Parent Cooperative
The Brookline Schools Staff Children’s Center is a parent-run cooperative center. In order to ensure the smooth running of the Center and keep down expenses, each family is expected to volunteer its time to the various committees (i.e. Personnel Committee, Finance Committee, Enrollment Committee, Fundraising Committee, and Building and Grounds Committee) that cooperatively administer the Center In addition, families attend two or three center-wide General Meetings that approve policy and budgeting, and two Saturday work days. Fundraising events are also held during the year. The sense of community that evolves from such participation is part of what makes BSSCC unique.

Philosophy
The major goal of the staff of BSSCC is to provide a warm, nurturing environment where children can learn and grow. We respect the differences in each child -- his or her interests, developmental needs, and personality. Play is the essential ingredient of the programs in our school. Through play in a well-arranged and regularly enriched environment, children learn about themselves and their capabilities and develop their cognitive, social, and emotional capacities. The classroom spaces are divided into learning areas, which guide children into self-initiated activities. Our curriculum is based on the premise that children are naturally curious about their environment. Learning materials and activities reflect the interests and concerns of the children. At BSSCC teachers strive to encourage a sense of community, and eventually, a sense of the importance of each child as a participating member of a group. Each classroom works to provide experiences that foster a sense of self as a competent individual, a positive pattern of interaction with others, and an internalization of self-control.

We encourage interested families to attend our Open House in late January. A flyer with specifics will be sent to you.

We begin the enrollment process for the upcoming school year in February. Priority in enrollment is given to current families, Brookline school staff, alumni of the Center, and then Brookline residents and town employees.
