Frequently Asked Questions - School Day and Registration

WHAT TIME DOES SCHOOL BEGIN? 

The elementary instructional day (Kindergarten through Grade 8) begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:20 p.m.  The High School day begins at 8:20 a.m. and concludes at 2:45 p.m., although certain electives may begin at 7:30 a.m.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SCHOOL  MY CHILD(REN) WILL ATTEND?

We have eight (8) elementary schools and one High School in our district.  Assignment to school is based on your street address.  To determine your school district, try our School Locator. The School Locator will show your school district and indicate whether or not your new address is in a buffer zone.

WHAT IS A BUFFER ZONE?

All of the elementary schools in Brookline have buffer zone streets in their district. Buffer zones were designed to help keep class sizes small.  The Superintendent assigns student to either of the schools served by their buffer district based on the enrollment at the grade the child is entering.  To learn more about Buffer Zones, click here.

WHAT DO I NEED FOR REGISTRATION?

Once you know your home school, you may contact the office directly to make an appointment with the guidance and office staff.  Visit our Registration page for more information.

In addition to the registration forms, you will need to provide the following documents in order to register: 
• the original deed or lease for the property where you will be living in Brookline, along with the receipt for the first payment and a utility bill;
• a birth certificate/passport may be substituted for a child not born in the United States;
• immunization records and,
• previous school records for the student.
