Public Hearings on BHS Expansion on April 26th and April 27th

The Building Committee for the BHS Expansion Project will be voting a preferred expansion option on Wednesday, May 3. Before then, all community members are invited to share their input and comments with the Building Committee and the School Committee at one of two Public Hearings happening the week of April 24. Each Public Hearing will have a presentation from the architects on the design options and costs, and then, an opportunity for individuals to make a 3 minute statement. The Building Committee will hold a Public Hearing on April 26 at 7 p.m. in the School Committee Room on the 5th floor of Town Hall. The School Committee will hold a Public Hearing on April 27 at 7pm at the same location. Once a preferred expansion option has been chosen, funding for the next stage of study will be considered and voted at Town Meeting in May. These public hearings and consideration at Town Meeting are critical to keeping the project on schedule and ensuring a high-quality educational experience for students as high school enrollment continues to increase.

With Brookline High School enrollment expected to increase by an additional 700 students in the upcoming years, the need for expansion is evident and provides an exciting opportunity to better serve the students of Brookline. In December 2016, the BHS Building Committee was formed. It is made up of educators, staff, current and future parents, neighbors, a BHS student, and representatives of the Board of Selectmen, School Committee, Building Commission, Advisory Committee, Parks & Open Space Commission, Planning Board, Town Meeting, and many other important groups. The BHS Building Committee has been working with HMFH Architects, BHS leadership, and school and town staff to identify a preliminary design option for the project.
