• Welcome, New Brookline Families

    Welcome, New Brookline Families!

Beginning Kindergarten is an exciting time for both children and their families. We hope that by providing comprehensive information and detailed instructions, registration will be straight-forward, allowing your family to enjoy the excitement.

Before you start registering for Kindergarten, here are a few important reminders:

    • There are no exceptions for age eligibility. A student must be five (5) years old on or before August 31 of the year in which he/she enters kindergarten at the Public Schools of Brookline.

      • Students enrolling for Kindergarten in September 2020 must have been born between September 1, 2014 and August 31, 2015.

      • Students enrolling for Kindergarten in September 2019 must have been born between September 1, 2013 and August 31, 2014.

    • Registration is in-person and by appointment only.

    • Registration can be completed by legal parent/guardian only.

Registration begins with an online enrollment application. Prior to completing this, however, there are a few important tasks you must complete:

    1. Print out our Registration Checklist and use it to guide you through the process.

    2. Ensure that you and your child are current Brookline residents. You must have the proper documentation to verify your residence. If you are planning to move to Brookline, you must occupy your Brookline home before you register your child. You cannot proceed with registering your child until you and your child are both living in Brookline. You may begin to fill out the application approximately one month in advance of your arrival to secure an appointment after you take occupancy of your Brookline home.

    3. Gather the required documentation. These materials will assist you in answering questions in the online application and are required to bring to your in-person appointment with the Office of Registration and Enrollment. The full list of required documents can be accessed here. Please note that all documents that are not in English must be accompanied by authorized translations into English.

    4. Review the health requirements. Massachusetts Department of Public Health immunization requirements must be met before your child is able to begin school. The full list of health requirements can be found and downloaded here.

    5. Determine which School Zone you live in. In Brookline, students are assigned to one of Brookline’s K-8 schools based primarily on the location of their home. Each residence is either in a single School Zone or in a “Buffer Zone” which includes two or more schools. To find out the School Zone or Buffer Zone for your address, use our online Where Am I search tool.

When using this tool, first search for your address. When the results are displayed, scroll to the right until you see School District and School Buffer Zone section. If there is no School Buffer Zone listed then you live in the School District that is listed. If a Buffer Zone is listed, the “Buffer Zone” is that address’ district, regardless of what the “School Zone” may indicate. For more about School Zones and Buffer Zones, visit our Buffer
      FAQs page.

Once you have completed steps 1-5, you are ready to access our online application, called Registration Gateway.

If your student is already "sealed" in Registration Gateway, please click "Add a student". You will then fill in a new application for your student to apply for Kindergarten. Some of the information should be saved from the previous application. You will then be able to schedule a registration appointment and bring all the required documents.
