Ben Lummis joined the Public Schools of Brookline as the Special Assistant to the Superintendent for Strategy and Performance. Mr. Lummis is an accomplished leader, problem solver, and team builder who has worked in public education for twenty years.
Ben worked as Vice President with Mass 2020 and the National Center on Time & Learning, leading the TIME Collaborative, a five-state initiative to develop models of high quality expanded time schools.
In this position, Mr. Lummis led the team responsible for direct work with principals, teachers, and district leaders helping them to effectively expand the school day and calendar to increase academic achievement, strengthen instruction, and deepen student engagement.
Until recently Ben served as Vice President of Educator and Professional Development Programs at EF Education First, one of the world’s leading international education companies. He has also served as Director at the Center for
Collaborative Education and as a School Committee member in Cambridge. He began his career as a middle school English teacher in Cambridge and Needham.
Ben earned a Master of Arts degree in Teaching at Tufts University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Economics from the University of Michigan.
William H. Lupini assumed the position of Superintendent of Schools in Brookline in July, 2004. Prior to coming to Brookline, Dr. Lupini served as Superintendent for seven years in Beverly, Massachusetts, and for two years in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Lupini has also served as Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Assistant High School Principal in Kutztown, as well as having worked as a Program Specialist with the New Jersey Department of Education. He also taught Marketing Education at Maple Shade High School in New Jersey and Bucks County Technical School in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Lupini has served as President of the Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN) Governing Board and currently serves as President-Elect of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents (MASS). He has also served on the Special Commission on Education Collaboratives and the Commission on Achievement Gaps. He teaches School Law in a number of programs for aspiring school administrators.
Dr. Lupini holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Administration from Lehigh University, a Master of Education degree in Leadership, Administration and Supervision from Rider University, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing and Business Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Deputy Superintendent for Administration and Finance
Mary Ellen Dunn joined the Public Schools of Brookline in July 2015. Ms. Dunn has served as the Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations for the Lexington Public Schools for the past eight years. Prior to assuming her current role in Lexington, she served as the Director of Fiscal and Management Services in Natick Public Schools for four years. In addition, she has served as the Director of Finance and Operations in Needham Public Schools and as a certified Town Treasurer and Tax
Collector in the Town of Sudbury. She started her professional career as a Presidential Management Intern with the US General Accounting Office, now known as the US Government Accountability Office. Ms. Dunn has a breadth and depth of municipal finance knowledge and experience that crosses both school and the municipal boundaries.
Ms. Dunn is also an active and engaged member in many professional organizations and has received numerous awards for her outstanding contributions. She is a past president of the Massachusetts Government Finance Officers Association and a past board member of MASBO as well as a recipient of the Donald D. Johnson Operational and Cost Efficiency Award in Lexington Public Schools in 2011. She currently serves as an instructor and mentor for many school business administrators in the areas of
municipal finance law, policy analysis, program evaluation, and is an advocate for fostering collaborative partnerships within schools and municipal departments.
Ms. Dunn holds a Masters of Public Administration from Suffolk University, School of Management with a concentration in Government Finance and a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst).
Karen Shmukler joined the Public Schools of Brookline in 2005. Prior to this, Karen worked for over a decade as Senior Executive of Child and Family Services at Brockton Area Multi-Services where she established a national reputation for her work utilizing the wrapound process
in the arenas of public mental health, public child welfare and public education.
Dr. Shmukler received her Clinical Psychology degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). Karen received her Doctorate of Education from Nova Southeastern University.
Jennifer C. Fischer-Mueller joined the Public Schools of Brookline in 2002. Her former administrative positions have included Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Professional Development, Amherst, NH and Dean of Faculty, Souhegan High School, Amherst, NH.
For a total of thirteen years, Dr. Fischer-Mueller taught science at Souhegan High School, Hollis/Brookline High School, Hollis, NH, and Spaulding Junior High School, Rochester, NH. As a teacher, she received a variety of awards and achievements, including Tandy Technology Excellence
in Science Teaching Award and the honor of CitiBank National Faculty.
Dr. Fischer-Mueller holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from the University of New Hampshire, along with a Doctorate of Education, from the University of Massachusetts/Lowell.
Elaine O’Sullivan joined the Public Schools of Brookline as Director of Human Resources in August 2015. Ms. O’Sullivan served as the Director of Human Resources at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, a position she has held since 2007. She has also served Framingham State College for four (4) years as the Director of Human Resources, Affirmative Action and Disability Services, and as the Assistant Director of Human Resources for the Boston Police Department. She started her professional
career at Hay Management Consultants, an international human resources consulting company, which provided her with an opportunity to work with a wide spectrum of clients, both public and private.
Ms. O’Sullivan holds a Master of Public Administration from Suffolk University and a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Anselm College.
Susan Wolf Ditkoff, Chairman, was elected to the School Committee in 2008. Ms. Ditkoff is a Partner and Co-Head of the Philanthropy Practice at The Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit affiliate of Bain & Co.
Her work focuses on strategy consulting and leadership development for philanthropists, education, and youth development clients. She is Vice President of the Harvard Business School Alumni Board of Directors, and was a leadership coach at the school for six years.
She and her husband have three young children and are Driscoll School parents. She has a BA from Yale College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Ms. Ditkoff’s current term expires in May 2016.
Barbara Scotto, Vice Chairman, was elected to the School Committee in May 2009. She is a graduate of Wilson College and has an M.Ed. from Johns Hopkins University and an M.S and an M.A. from Simmons College where she was an adjunct member of the faculty for many years.
She is Co-Director of Children’s Literature New England and is also actively involved in the work of The Examined Life: Greek Studies in the Schools. Ms. Scotto joined the Brookline School System in 1976, beginning as the librarian for the BEEP project.
She spent most of her career at the Driscoll School where she taught from 1981 through 2006. In 2002 she was the winner of the Brookline Foundation’s Ernest Caverly Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Her two children graduated from Devotion School and Brookline High. She has been a Town Meeting member, first in Precinct 2 and currently in Precinct 8, since 1973. Ms. Scotto’s present term expires in 2015.
Benjamin Chang was elected to the School Committee in 2012. He is the Founder and Managing Principal of Wellfleet Capital Partners, a healthcare focused investment and advisory firm. His investments focus on health plans as well as providers and ancillary services.
Over the last 16 years, he has served on a number of corporate boards. Mr. Chang has a BA from Tufts University and an MBA from Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
He and his wife, Amber Chan, have been residents of Brookline for 20 years and currently have a son at the Runkle School. He served on the Runkle School Council from 2008-2011. Mr. Chang’s current term expires in 2015.
Helen Charlupski was first elected to the School Committee in 1992. She holds a BA and Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan.
She was a member of the Early Childhood Advisory Council of the Massachusetts Department of Education from 1994-2004 and has been the Massachusetts Association of School Committees representative to the Department of Early Education and Care since its inception in 2005.
Ms. Charlupski was the Chair of EDCO (Education Collaborative, which Brookline belongs to along with 17 other communities west of Boston) from 2009-2012.
Ms. Charlupski is married to Dr. Joseph Biederman and has three children who graduated from the Runkle School and Brookline High School. Ms. Charlupski’s present term expires in 2016.
Michael Glover was elected to the School Committee in 2014. He is an attorney in the Office of General Counsel at Northeastern University. Prior to working at Northeastern, Mr. Glover worked at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation where he focused primarily on real estate matters. Mr. Glover has also worked at the law firms o
f Goulston & Storrs and Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge (now Locke Lord). Mr. Glover was a member of the Brookline Override Study Committee in 2013 and 2014, on which he served as chairman of the Municipal Services Subcommittee, and as a member of the School's Subcommittee and the Population and Special Education Task Force. He holds a J.D. from American University and a B.S. in journalism from Northeastern University. Mr.
Glover and his wife have two young children who will attend the Lincoln School. Mr. Glover’s current term expires in 2017.
Lisa R. Jackson, Ph.D. was elected to School Committee in 2014. Dr. Jackson is the Co-Founder and Principal of Jackson-Ellis Associates, a philanthropic advising firm that works with clients who have an appetite to create impact in the world through their giving.
Prior to this endeavor she was the Managing Partner for Portfolio Investments at New Profit Inc., a venture philanthropy firm that invests nationally in nonprofits seeking to scale their impact.
Dr. Jackson serves on the national boards of Year Up, the National College Advising Corps Single Stop USA, and the Reset Foundation. She and her husband have two children and are parents at Pierce School.
She has a Ph.D. and M.A. in Education from Stanford University, and a B.S. in Psychology from Howard University. Dr. Jackson’s current term expires in May 2017.
