October 4 Reopening Update: Transition to Hybrid Model Begins on October 20

The attached letter from Interim Superintendent Dr. Jim Marini provides important information and resources about the reopening of school this fall. Please review the materials in detail. We will continue to update you weekly on our efforts.

Translations of the letter are attached below.

Dear PSB Community,

I hope you and your family enjoyed a pleasant fall weekend. I write to you this evening with a few important updates to our RemotePlus reopening plan. There is a lot of information in this message so please reach out to your school leader and/or supervisor if you have any questions. District leaders will also be providing this information in detail to the PSB School Committee on Thursday, October 8th at 6:00 pm.

This information applies to students in grades 1-12 RemotePlus only. BEEP and Remote Learning Academy hours, days, and learning models will remain unchanged. See note below about Kindergarten.

PSB Hybrid Model

The hybrid model PSB has adopted for grades 1-12 splits students into two cohorts and follows a 2.5 day in/2 day remote rotating schedule. We will do our best to keep siblings in the same cohort regardless of grade level. Students will be expected to attend school a full day except for Wednesdays. Wednesday will now be our early release day (12:00pm dismissal) and Friday will switch to a full day. Students will not have lunch at school on Wednesdays.

Tents

Tents began arriving at school locations last week. Baker, Lincoln, and Driscoll schools all received their tents. Other schools are still awaiting delivery dates.

“Plus”

School leaders have already provided “plus” opportunities for students and are continuing to work on consistent schedules for “plus” moving forward. Most schools hosted “meet and greets” where students met their teachers and picked up materials. Other schools have begun to include engaging social activities such as read-alouds to their “plus” time. These opportunities have been great for both students and staff.

In planning for more consistent and scheduled “plus” opportunities, we are asking all school teams to continue to adhere to public health guidelines and ensure equity of access to students who are out of district and/or ride the bus for transportation to and from school.

Health and Safety

  • Please make sure to complete the Heath Attestation Form before your child begins entering the school building. Questions about the form, or other health and safety concerns, can be directed to your child’s school nurse.
  • All schools and classrooms will have appropriate air exchange and ventilation upgrades by the time they are set to return to school buildings in the hybrid model.

RLA/RemotePlus Switch

As described during planning, families will have the opportunity at the end of the first semester to make a change in their child’s learning model. Families will receive a message from the district on November 2, 2020 with more information. If you decide to change the learning model for your child, they will begin their placement on November 16th.

You may continue to find updates on reopening on our website. As always, the health and safety of our community has been at the forefront when making these decisions and we appreciate your patience as we navigate these ever-changing times. We are eager to have our students back in schools and are looking forward to the weeks ahead.

Thank you,

Jim Marini
PSB Interim Superintendent
