    Town-wide Athletic Opportunities: Grades 5 - 8

The town of Brookline sponsors all eight elementary schools the opportunity to compete in two town-wide athletic opportunities, cross country in the fall and track and field in the spring, practices and the meet are free of charge.

    Fall: Cross Country
The P.E. staff works together to help prepare students to run/jog one-mile. The final meet will be held at Larz Anderson Park.

    Dates: Fall (mid-September to mid-October)

Expectations: Students are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible. Students are welcomed to participant in all practices but in order to compete they are required to commit to at least 2 practices and have the ability to run/jog one mile.

Practices: The P.E. staff will hold practices before and after school a few weeks prior to the meet. The practices are designed to gradually increase student’s cardiovascular endurance and build upon muscular strength and endurance in order for students to get their best one-mile time.

Size of Team: Schools are allowed to take as many participants as they would like, we as the P.E. staff will make a decision based on student ability, effort, sportsmanship and participation. A list of participants will be posted one week prior to meet to let the students and faculty know.

Permission slips: Students who are chosen for the meet will be given a permission slip to be filled out by the parent and returned to the P.E. staff.

    Spring: Track and Field
The P.E. staff collaborates in an effort to train, teach and prepare students to compete in a track and field meet against all other seven elementary schools. The 5th & 6th grade students compete on one day with girls competing against girls and boys competing and against boys. As well as the 7th & 8th grade, for example all 7th grade girls will compete only against the other 7th grade girls in the district with the one exception being the 4 X 100m relay.

    Dates: Spring (mid-April to mid-May)
Expectations: Students are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible. Students are welcomed to participant in all practices but in order to compete they are required to commit to at least 2 practices.

Practices: The P.E. staff will hold practices before and after school a few weeks prior to the meet. The practices are designed to gradually increase student’s cardiovascular endurance and build upon muscular strength and endurance in order for students to compete at their best ability.

Size of Team: The P.E. staff will make decisions based on students behavior, effort and data taken during practices and place students into events. There are only 3 allotted slots per event so cuts may have to be made. Students at max can compete in 3 events, very seldom does this occur but students may compete in one track, one field and the relay. Most often students will be represented in one event. A list of participants will be posted one week prior to meet to let the students and faculty know.

Permission slips: Students who are chosen for the meet will be given a permission slip to be filled out by the parent and returned to the P.E. staff
