On most Fridays during the school year, the Office of the Superintendent will send an update to the community highlighting some of the excellent work being done by our educators and school leaders. The update will also include important announcements from the district’s central office. These newsletters will be posted on the PSB website (www.brookline.k12.ma.us/supt-updates).

On November 16, 2023, the Brookline Town Meeting voted overwhelmingly to approve the renaming of the Heath School to Roland Hayes School.
This was the culmination of an elaborate renaming process that the school commenced after it discovered, through Hidden Brookline, that the school’s previous name, Heath, was after a Brookline family that enslaved others.
As the school gears up to commemorate its new moniker with a community celebration, the Hayes Young Scholars collaborated with Brookline Interactive Group (BIG) and two local historians, Rob Daves and Barbara Brown, to make a video on their school's namesake!

We invite the Brookline community to come and be a part of the Roland Hayes School Renaming celebration on Monday, June 3, which is the late tenor's birthday and observed as Roland Hayes Day in Brookline.

As the Class of 2024 approaches graduation, the BHS Athletics Department gave seniors an opportunity to reflect upon their time playing sports at the school.
These student reflections are a nice reminder of the value that each department, club, team and program provides – enabling students to find their niche, their sense of belonging, and their ever-developing sense of self.

The BHS World Language department collaborated with the Performing Arts department to organize a special experience for students of Spanish 2 and French. They hosted two giants of the music industry, Cuban Grammy award winner David Oquendo and West African balafonist Famoro Dioubate.
Under the expert guidance of Mr. Oquendo, they delved into the vibrant rhythms of Afro-Cuban music, exploring the significance of each beat and melody of the bongo, guitar, and maracas. Meanwhile, Mr. Dioubate, a revered West African griot, transported them to the heart of his storytelling tradition, revealing the profound narrative power of music. From trying their hand at various musical instruments to engaging in bilingual discussions about the artists' journeys, students embraced a unique opportunity to broaden their horizons. Through Spanish and French, they connected with these artists, gaining invaluable insights into the universal language of music.
This enriching experience also extended to many BHS music classes, where students gained insights and inspiration from these esteemed musicians, further enhancing their musical education.
A special thanks to the generosity of the BHS PTO for this impactful experience!

This week's artwork comes to us from Emily Manning-Mingle's seventh grade classes at the Ruffin Ridley School
Nerikomi is a Japanese clay technique that involves stacking and arranging colored layers of clay to create patterns. To practice this technique, seventh graders in Ms. Manning-Mingle's classes created stripes, checkers, and marbled designs with red and white clay tinted with mason stains. For their final projects, students chose a form (coasters, a cup, box, bowl, mug, etc.) and a Nerikomi technique they wanted to use. After being fired in the kiln, students glazed their projects with clear and/or colored glazes.
This project was partially funded with an Idea Lab Grant from the Brookline Education Foundation.
