This page is designed to assist families prepare for each step of the registration process.

    roadmap for registration

    Who is eligible to register?

    • In order to register for school, you and your children must be residents of Brookline and provide proof that the family lives in Brookline.

      • If you are planning to move to Brookline and hope to enroll your child or children, you will only be able to register once you have moved into your Brookline residence. You may begin to fill out the application approximately one month in advance of your arrival to secure an appointment after you take occupancy of your Brookline home.

    • Temporary residence in Brookline, for the sole purpose of attending the public schools, will not be considered as residency.

      • To attend the Public Schools of Brookline, a student must reside in the Town of Brookline. A student’s primary residence is the place where s/he dwells permanently, not temporarily, and is the place that is the center of his or her domestic, social and civic life. The primary residence of a minor child is presumed to be the legal residence of the parent(s) or guardian(s) who have physical custody of the child. It is presumed that if a student is or will be residing here for three months or less, the student does not meet resident eligibility requirements and cannot be enrolled.

    • Under State and Federal law, your child will always have a place in the Brookline Schools. None of Brookline's K-8 schools, or the high school, will ever turn away a student who meets the residency requirements above. Please be mindful of school zones and buffer zones when registering your child for school in Brookline.

What are the steps of the registration process?

    1. Verify Residency and Gather Documentation. You will complete this step prior to registration. If you currently live in Brookline, gather the required documentation that is needed for the registration process. The list of all the documents you need to complete registration is here. You will need these documents when you apply online.

    2. Submit Enrollment Application Online. As part of the online application, you will select a time for your in-person meeting at our Office of Registration and Enrollment.

    3. Meet with an Enrollment Team Member at the Office of Registration and Enrollment. Following your online application, you will complete this step. Our enrollment team will verify your documentation and help facilitate the next steps for your student’s enrollment.

    4. English Learner Education Screening (if applicable).  The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) regulations require that all Massachusetts schools determine the language(s) used with or by the student, in order to identify their specific language needs. If a language other than or in addition to English is used with or by the student, the District is required to do further screening on behalf of your student. If this is required, the Office of Registration and Enrollment staff will schedule an appointment for your student with our English Learner Education (ELE) Department at the time of registration. The Home Language Survey also allows families to identify the need for translation and/or an interpreter.

    5. School Assignment. The Office of Registration and Enrollment will communicate all school assignments to families. If you live in a Buffer Zone, you will receive your school assignment on a rolling basis.  The ELE department communicates with the Office of Registration and Enrollment to facilitate school assignments for students who take advantage of a Native Language Support Program (Korean, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, or Russian). You may locate your zoned school here.

    6. Meet with your School Counselor and School Nurse. These two meetings occur at your child’s school. At these meetings, your child will have the chance to meet their school counselor and school nurse. The school nurse must verify that immunization records meet Massachusetts Department of Public Health requirements before a student can start school.

    7. Start School. Enrollment in the Public Schools of Brookline is complete when your child attends their first day of school!
